Self-Care Isn't Selfish: Why It Matters
How often do you put yourself last?
If you're anything like most of the people I see, you're busy looking after everyone else. Between work, kids, family, appointments, housework, cooking, and everything else life throws at you, it's easy to believe that taking time for yourself is a luxury you simply don't have.
But here's the truth...
Self-care isn't selfish. It's essential.
The better you look after yourself, the better you're able to look after the people who rely on you.
Why We Feel Guilty About Self-Care
So many people feel guilty when they spend time or money on themselves.
"I should be doing something productive."
"The kids need me."
"I'll book that massage another time."
"I don't have time."
Sound familiar?
Somewhere along the way we've started believing that constantly being busy means we're doing a good job. We wear exhaustion like a badge of honour, but the reality is that running on empty helps nobody.
You can't pour from an empty cup.
What Self-Care Actually Means
When people hear the words self-care, they often picture expensive spa days, weekends away or luxury treatments.
While those things are lovely, self-care is so much more than that.
Real self-care is about doing the things that help your body and mind function at their best.
That might include:
- Getting enough sleep.
- Eating nourishing meals.
- Drinking enough water.
- Moving your body regularly.
- Taking a walk in nature.
- Saying no when your plate is already full.
- Taking a few deep breaths during a stressful day.
- Booking a massage before your body is screaming for one.
- Making time for hobbies you enjoy.
- Spending quality time with people who fill your cup.
Self-care doesn't have to take hours. Even small daily habits can make a big difference over time.
What Happens When We Ignore Ourselves?
Our bodies are incredibly clever.
They'll often whisper before they scream.
At first it might be feeling a little more tired than usual.
Then the headaches start.
Your neck and shoulders tighten.
You feel irritable.
Your sleep isn't as good.
Your digestion changes.
You catch every cold that's going around.
You lose motivation, struggle to concentrate or simply feel overwhelmed.
Stress affects almost every system in the body. When we're constantly in "go mode," our nervous system stays switched on, making it difficult for our bodies to fully rest, recover and repair.
Ignoring these signs for long enough can eventually lead to burnout.
The Health Benefits of Prioritising Yourself
Making time for yourself isn't just about feeling good in the moment—it has real health benefits.
Regular self-care can help:
- Reduce stress and anxiety.
- Improve sleep quality.
- Lower muscle tension and pain.
- Support a healthy immune system.
- Improve mood and mental wellbeing.
- Increase energy levels.
- Improve focus and productivity.
- Reduce the risk of burnout.
- Support healthy blood pressure.
- Encourage healthier lifestyle choices.
When you feel better physically and mentally, everything else becomes easier too.
Where Massage Fits In
One of my favourite ways to help people practise self-care is through massage.
Massage isn't just about relaxing for an hour (although that's a wonderful bonus!).
It can help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, encourage relaxation, decrease stress hormones and give your nervous system the opportunity to slow down.
Many people don't realise how tense they've become until they finally stop long enough to relax.
Walking out of a massage feeling lighter, calmer and less sore isn't just a nice feeling—it's your body thanking you for giving it the care it needed.
Nutrition Is Self-Care Too
Food is another powerful form of self-care.
Eating well isn't about being perfect or following strict diets. It's about giving your body the nutrients it needs to have energy, recover properly and function well every day.
Simple things like including enough protein, eating plenty of colourful fruit and vegetables, drinking enough water and planning balanced meals can make a huge difference to how you feel.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's consistency.
Small healthy choices made regularly will always beat big changes that only last a week.
Remember This...
You deserve the same care and attention that you so freely give to everyone else.
Looking after yourself doesn't make you selfish.
It makes you healthier.
It makes you happier.
It makes you more patient, more present and more capable of showing up for the people you love.
So whether it's booking that massage you've been putting off, going for a walk, preparing a healthy meal or simply sitting down with a cup of tea for ten quiet minutes...
Give yourself permission.
Your body works hard for you every single day.
It deserves to be looked after too.
If you've been putting yourself last, maybe it's time to change that. Whether you're looking to relieve muscle tension, reduce stress, or improve your overall wellbeing, I'm here to help. Book your next appointment and start making your health a priority
